The Office -The Christmas Specials
Watching these two episodes again for the first time some five years after their original TV screening was ultimately disappointing. Where is the taut, spare structure of the weekly series? Yes, there are some great vignettes but the longer running time here seems to have presented Gervais and Merchant with a problem rather than an opportunity resulting in too many unexpected longeurs. See it, of course. It provides a resolution, of sorts, to two major plot lines from the series - the 'will they/won't they' relationship between Dawn & Tim and David Brent's need for one. Then seek out 'The Office - An American Workplace' and discover a US version of a UK comedy series that, for once, just might have the edge on the original.

Alice For The Under Fives
First published in 1889 (not 1890 as stated on the fly leaf here), Carroll intended ‘The Nursery Alice’ to be read ‘by children aged from nought to five’. He re-wrote the original in a simple, abbreviated, form ‘to be thumbed, cooed over, dog-eared and rumpled’ by ‘the dimpled darlings that fill (the) nursery' ; but the principal attraction today probably lies in the twenty coloured illustrations from Tenniel’s originals. The edition here is a facsimile of the 1890 re-printing, its preliminaries oddly re-sequenced, but complete nevertheless save only for a missing frontispiece tissue guard. Whether Carroll’s arch prose revision will appeal to today’s under-fives is debateable and the book may well be more of nostalgic appeal to their (great?) grandparents.

Garbo Talks!
I have never warmed to Greta Garbo and her catalogue of ill-fated heroines but her place in cinema history is undeniable and no self-respecting film buff would deny her representation in a film collection. This Warner Brothers set brings together the best of her sound movies in excellent prints. The absence of all but the most cursory notes is a disappointment however, as are the ‘extras’ which are confined to theatrical trailers – it takes a strong stomach to watch Freddie Bartholomew’s ‘direct to audience’ invitation to watch ‘Camille’ – and, somewhat inexplicably, the 1921 Nazimova/Valentino silent version of the classic Dumas tale.
