Barnabas in restored glorious black & White, a must have for any fan!
These are amusing and as they were essentially done live there are some dropped lines and other issues which only add to the charm. The image is frankly a lot better than I expected, crisp awesome black and white, I think anyone who's looking is probably a fan (or you will be!) & would want this-Also the seller was great, really great service and this is no boot or anything, real factory issue!

Sinatra, Wee Small Hours, It doesn't get any better!
To say this is timeless is an understatement. This is the very best collection of songs of unrequited love done by anyone ever. Period. All the songs are recognized as standards now, but as to be expected, Frank Sinatra sort of rediscoverd many of them, and re-did them first and best. Throughout his career he'd pick the pearls from a failed theatre production, or hear a song and know how it should be done, and then do it. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are beautiful and somewhat understated-the perfect backdrop for a quiet and introspective listening experience, and Sinatra's near perfect vocals make this a must have. I believe the sonics on the earlier cd (from about 1989 I think) edition are better than the remaster done on the reissued concepts box set. Whoever did the remastering on the concepts ressue circa 1998 or 2000 got a bit too ambitious with the noise reduction. The subtle high end character suffers for it, but if you're not intimately familiar with this recording you probably wouldn't notice any of that. It certainly sounds clean and amazingly good otherwise. It's a 1955 recording but you'd swear it was done last year! There is a review here that expresses disappointment-frankly that's astonishing. The performances and the cover are recognized as among the best of the genre. The cover art is famous and is very much like an Edward Hopper scene-for anyone familiar with his works. Buy it and sit back. As you take it in you'll be taken away, as Frank makes you think he's singing for only you!

Great mastering, fidelity, unequaled as of now.
Best possible Sinatra Columbia isues are this big blue box and it's really nice hard cover book. While some previous reissues were better than others, all the Columbia releases prior to this set were largely inferior, with significant filtering, added reverb/"360 sound" and in one case bongos? A generally murky sound altering the original recording was most of what you could get. These discs represent an amazing attention to detail and very careful mastering. 1st released in 1993 and basically now only through collector sales, ebay etc... appear to remain unequaled as of today, with really clean and true / unaltered original source mastering, amazing fidelity and a necessary and forgivable amount of original source background noise on some tracks-this is amazingly limited. That some of these sound as they do will blow your mind if you have not already heard them, and everything Sinatra did is here-they used the best source available-some safety masters with an alternate take even. Columbia had recorded Sinatra from 1943 on at 33 1/3 onto 16 inch optically flat aluminum and lacquer masters, which was a leap ahead of others in the industry and largely why these have such great fidelity. It's puzzling why so many previous issues were so murkey and flat-maybe they used old 78's but these are very clean, rich and best of all they were not altered with fake stereo or added reverb. The material from 1949 on starts to see the intro of magnetic tape recording and some of those tracks have even better sound, though amazingly some of the disc transfers sound so good you'd think it was hifi sound which was not really available until about 1954. Long and short, there is no equal in terms of quality and completeness to match this set currently. And it's hard to imagine these sounding as good as they do, you'll have to get your own to find out though.
