The Darling Buds "Crawdaddy"
Brilliant pop record for people bored of pop. Crawdaddy is the second proper album from The Darling Buds, and a huge leap forward in style and quality thanks to legendary producer Stephen Street (who also produced The Smiths and Blur, among others). There's a sense of experimentation with sound and vocal delivery, without ever losing sight of still being desperately hummable music. Both the first track (It Makes No Difference) and the last (The End of the Beginning) chart new territory with mixing and double-tracking, but there are still a couple of tracks that sound like the Darling Buds of old - "Do You Have to Break My Heart" is classic DB stuff, and "Honeysuckle" lodges in your brain with its clean and simple approach. Highly recommended. This is pop music as it was meant to be. Tuneful, catchy and full of subtle levels that make repeated listenings rewarding.

AQUAMARINE
Aimed at the Princess Diaries' audience, Aquamarine carries itself with such panache that it's very watchable for soft-hearted grown-ups too. The story concerns finding young love, and is told with wit and plenty of sweet romance with the supernatural element of a mermaid - the occasionally catty but always amusing Aquamarine. Aquamarine's quest to prove love exists is told with a delightful innocence (suitable for slightly older children) but this isn't really a film about romance so much as about the importance of friendship and accepting change. The acting is universally strong, with Emma Roberts in a stand-out performance as the emotionally brittle Claire, a teenager who's still a lot closer to 12 than 15. Touches like Claire's bike handle tassels absolutely make the movie, and it stands up very well to repeated viewings because of that - the director's done more than just tell the story. Aquamarine may be fantasy, but the values and moral lesson are very much ones everyone can relate to. Quick warning - the film does contain a little "non-swearing" - almost swearing using some fish gags. It's all very inoffensive and will give older viewers a chuckle. Highly recommended.
