I have sold African Art on eBay for about nine years. I sell masks, statuary, stools, bronze, cloth and a little jewellery. I travel four times a year to source all my pieces and I have built up a trusted group of suppliers over the years in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Ivory Coast. Where it is difficult for a European to travel, Mali and DRC for instance, my suppliers travel for me and collect interesting items.
All of my items are genuine artefacts made in the villages by carvers and artesans using traditional tools and methods. Even newer pieces are authentic in the sense of respecting the tribal traditions: masks may be new, in some instances, but they are in the exact same styles as those carved a hundred years ago. My suppliers are also always on the look-out for older pieces but we are careful about neo-colonial exploitation and do not buy ancient pieces.
