Pat Launer, Theater Critic, Arts Writer on 'Musica Sacra': Christel Veraart has the voice of an angel... pure, crystalline and mesmeric. Her CD is the perfect calm in the storm of everyday life. Eleven resonant interpretations of beloved sacred arias, primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries Christel Veraart first visited Bahia de Los Angeles around Thanksgiving time in 2005. In the San Borja Mountains, surrounded by Indian rock art, lava-strewn hillsides, pristine beauty and serenity, she heard of the Mission San Borja which was founded by Jesuit Father Wenceslaus Linck in 1762. Though Christel had lived in the United States since 2001, she was born and raised in the Netherlands, which helped explain her craving for spaces that return one to times long ago. The San Borja Mission fed into that need, and Christel found herself dreaming about singing there. An idea was formed. She was soon introduced to Father Gabriel in the small village of Jesus Maria, who was the priest in charge of restoring missions. After many months of planning and preparation, a concert took place on Sunday, March 18th, 2007. The program of this Sacred Music Concert consisted of a carefully selected repertory from the time when the Baja Californian missions were founded and built. Sung in Latin, Spanish, German and English, the music was composed both in the Old and New World. The mission was filled with people from all over Baja and the U.S. for this benefit concert, and all donations went toward the restoration of the beautiful mission of San Borja. The idea for the concert was to bring music to places of beauty and inspiration, and resulted in the recording of Musica Sacra. Carlos Lazcano (journalist for the Ensanada newspaper, El Vigia in Mexico), said the following: "The Dutch mezzo-soprano Christel Verart offered an angelical concert...It was amazing to hear the fineness of her voice and to see there, sitting in pews, on the floor and on the stones, enchanted and astonished, the rancheros of the region; also there were impresarios, tourists, scientists, geologists, historians, housewives, and people who love this region profoundly. It has been more than two hundred years since in this mission and all the others, that God has been praised in this way..."
