Product Information

Wireless technology is a truly revolutionary paradigm shift, enabling multimedia communications between people and devices from any location. It also underpins exciting applications such as sensor networks, smart homes, telemedicine, and automated highways. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the underlying theory, design techniques and analytical tools of wireless communications, focusing primarily on the core principles of wireless system design. The book begins with an overview of wireless systems and standards. The characteristics of the wireless channel are then described, including their fundamental capacity limits. Various modulation, coding, and signal processing schemes are then discussed in detail, including state-of-the-art adaptive modulation, multicarrier, spread spectrum, and multiple antenna techniques. The concluding chapters deal with multiuser communications, cellular system design, and ad-hoc network design. Design insights and tradeoffs are emphasized throughout the book. It contains many worked examples, over 200 figures, almost 300 homework exercises, over 700 references, and is an ideal textbook for students. The book is also a valuable reference for engineers in the wireless industry. Andrea Goldsmith received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. Prior to this she was an Assistant Professor at the California Institute of Technology. She has also held positions in industry at Maxim Technologies and AT&T Bell Laboratories. She is a Fellow of the IEEE, has received numerous other awards and honors, and is the author of over 150 technical papers in the field of wireless communications.

Reviews
'A brilliant book - Andrea Goldsmith explains in a clear, profound and accurate way not only the fundamentals of wireless communication systems, but also some of the most recent developments in the field, such as MIMO, adaptive modulation, equalization, multicarrier and ad hoc networks. Students pursuing a degree in electrical engineering will find in the first six chapters a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals in the subject - very few books treat the fundamentals in such a clear and, at the same time, deep way. Students pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the area will find an indispensable reference. For practising engineers, this book will provide the design tools of modern wireless networks. This book will shortly become a classic. It is simply an excellent job.' Juan M. Romero-Jerez, University of Malaga, Spain, 'Andrea Goldsmith has successfully created a book that balances the pressing needs of practical design and an appreciation for deep insights that come from theory. Written by a pioneer in adaptive modulation techniques for fading channels, this book is excellent in developing a working knowledge of modern wireless communication techniques that have been invented over the past decade. It is likely to become the standard textbook for wireless communications for the next 10 years.' Volkan Rodoplu, University of California, Santa Barbara, "Wireless Communications is a rare find: expansive but not shallow, current but coherent. This book is set up for education, with problem sets and excellent references, but it has a lot to offer the practicing engineer or researcher. The list of topics is exhaustive, including much of the most modern technology. This book would function well as a text for education, a reference for research, or good reading for someone interested in the field. Dr. Goldsmith's book strikes a nice balance of being mathematical while not being overly theoretical...This is an enjoyable and satisfying book for a nerd. It is possibly the best single book on wireless communication I have seen -- and I have seen many such books. I look forward to spending more time with this book." IEEE Microwave Magazine, ...certainly destined to become a standard reference work, and one which should find a deserving home on the bookshelves of post-graduate students, researchers, and wireless system designers.” IEEE Communications Engineer, 'Wireless Communications by Andrea Goldsmith is an excellent, reader-friendly book, which maintains the high standards of the Cambridge University Press ...'. Professor Stuart Schwartz, Princeton University, 'A brilliant book - Andrea Goldsmith explains in a clear, profound and accurate way not only the fundamentals of wireless communication systems, but also some of the most recent developments in the field, such as MIMO, adaptive modulation, equalization, multicarrier and ad hoc networks. This book will shortly become a classic. It is simply, an excellent job.' Juan M. Romero-Jerez - Associate Professor, University of Malaga, Spain, "The book is particularly well-suited as a teaching text since it provides about 100 examples, about 300 homework exercises, a thorough list of references, and, most important, clear and lucid explanations of the fundamental concepts in wireless communications...However, the book can also be valuable outside the classroom. In particular, Goldsmith provides discussion about the limitations and tradeoffs of wireless systems, as well as a view towards engineering solutions. These make the book useful for practicing engineers in the field and researchers attempting to get a first view of particular aspects of wireless communications...Wireless Communications by Andrea Goldsmith is an excellent, reader-friendly book." Volkan Rodoplu, University of California, Santa Barbara, 'As the field of wireless communications continues to spread and evolve, students, engineers, practitioners, and researchers face a daunting multitude of books and an enormous literature that often misleads and confuses. Andrea Goldsmith's book offers an up-to-date, comprehensive, reader-friendly, and valuable alternative. It is a veritable tour-de-force that sweeps the entire field with clarity, completeness, and sufficient detail that strikes a masterful balance between breadth and depth. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in a serious foray into the science and technology of wireless communications.'
