Product Information
Virtually everyone agrees that terrorism is defined by its impact on the public it targets. Yet there seems to be very little open discussion about how society has responded to it and how people are affected by it. This is no small gap in our understanding of 21st century terrorism. Invitation to Terror argues that what we need to really worry about is not what terrorists do but how we react to it, citing as an example politicians who claim that "our way of life" is facing an existential threat but find it difficult to explain just what exactly the way of life worth defending is. Western society in its current state of affairs, Furedi posits, simply lacks the necessary cultural and intellectual resources to deal with the threat of terrorism. Invitation to Terror details how as society becomes increasingly apprehensive about the future it has reached the point where it regards itself as a vulnerable target. This defensive response is influenced by many causes, the most important of which is the difficult society has in endowing conflict with meaning. The words used to describe the threat of terrorism -- unimaginable, incomprehensible, unbelievable -- serve to deflect our understanding of the issues at stake. Furedi argues that the problem is not "them" and does not come from "there." It is our problem, and it comes from within. But Furedi's message is ultimately a positive one: it is not difficult to diminish the impact of the threat of terrorism through changing the way we engage with it. Invitation to Terror will help you get started.

Reviews
"Furedi is a sociologist, adept at the analysis of culture... Invitation to Terror is a bold attempt to face important and disturbing questions" The Times Literary Supplement, August 2008, &"Author and University of Kent sociologistFuredi (Culture of Fear Revisited) stakes out a bold position in thisexploration of the War on Terror in particular, its 'self-fulfilling prophecy'effect, inspiring fear and passivity regardless of the actual danger. The onlything new about the 'new terrorism,' Furedi claims, is the perception that it'sany more sophisticated or effective than it used to be. Citing the resilienceof populations who coped with attacks far beyond the capabilities of today'sterrorists such as the Nazi blitz and the Allied bombings of Hamburgand Hiroshima Furediargues convincingly that 'terrorism cannot seriously threaten the integrity ofsociety nor undermine the way of life of a nation.' Though the British andAmerican governments do have that power, Furedi contends that the War on Terroris less a deliberate effort to cow or manipulate than it is a sincere butwrong-headed attempt to mobilize popular support rooted in fact and genuine concern byleaders who don't understand that 'society can absorb occasional acts ofterror,' but becomes disoriented and demoralized living in a protracted stateof fear. Referencing hundreds of independent studies, government reports andmedia commentary, Furedi contributes an insightful argument for a realistic,level-headed and self-aware approach to the problem of terrorism.&" (Dec.)Publishers Weekly &, "He (Frand Furedi) is good at noticing history repeating itself - for example, in 'the periodic discovery that terrorism represents a new and unprecedented danger' - and interrogates usefully the notions of 'vulnerability' or being 'at risk'"--Saturday Guardian, "Author and Universityof Kent sociologistFuredi (Culture of Fear Revisited) stakes out a bold position in thisexploration of the War on Terror-in particular, its 'self-fulfilling prophecy'effect, inspiring fear and passivity regardless of the actual danger. (Dec.)-Publishers Weekly, "This book is fresh, well written, awash with lightly worn learning and so confident in its perspective that the argument... gathers pace with such vigour as each chapter rolls by that the book's end it seems well-nigh irrefutable"--Times Higher Educational Supplement, ''Invitation to Terror is a bold attempt to face important and disturbing questions, and hits a number of its targets'' John Dunn, Times Literary Supplement, August 2008
