In the early '70s, President Richard M. Nixon decided to use the resources of his White House staff to augment his special investigations unit to uncover information on the Democratic National Committee's chairman, Larry O'Brien. The operation began with an illegal entry of the organization's Watergate headquarters office and the subsequent tapping of O'Brien's secretary's switchboard.<br><br>The rest, as they say, is history. What began as Nixon's desire to find foreign forces supporting the anti-Vietnam War protestors -- an occurrence that might ultimately allow his use of Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency operatives to investigate left-wing politicians -- backfired into one of the largest scandals to hit American politics since the McCarthy hearings.<br><br>In March of 1974, a federal grand jury indicted seven members of President Nixon's staff and charged them with a variety of crimes linked to the Watergate break in. After months of obfuscation and attempts to derail the grand jury investigation, the House Judiciary Committee received all of the evidence in the case in July of that year, and drafted a first article of impeachment against the President for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress.<br><br>The evidence was overwhelming and on August 9, 1974, Richard M. Nixon, 37th President of the United States, resigned from office, claiming to have lost his "political base." In reality, his resignation was principally due to his complicity in ordering an illegal "cover-up" action to hide the truth of the break-in. Although never personally professing to any guilt in the matter, he later admitted "errors in judgment."<br><br>Nixon Watergate, an interactive reference CD, contains historical video footage of the major players in the scandal and contains over 16,000 pages of official impeachment hearing transcripts related to the investigation of the 1972 Watergate incident. The CD features Congressional video testimony, biographies of the participants involved in the proceedings, historical footage of Nixon's career dating back to his famous Checkers speech, and searchable transcripts.<br><br>Whether you lived through the experience of a United States president resigning in disgrace and simply want to relive a bit of history, or you're a history buff curious about an unsettled era in American politics, Nixon Watergate provides an avenue of exploration into one of America's most compelling political stories.
