Product Information

Henrietta Szold took Queen Esther as a model and worked hard to save the Jewish people. In 1912, she founded the Jewish women's social justice organization, Hadassah. Henrietta started Hadassah determined to offer emergency medical care to mothers and children in Palestine. When WWII broke out, she rescued Jewish children from the Holocaust, and broadened Hadassah's mission to include education, youth development, and women's rights. Hadassah offers free help to all who need it and continues its mission to this day.

Reviews
"As a young girl in Baltimore in the late 1800s, Henrietta Szold was inspired by the story of Queen Esther read during the Jewish holiday of Purim. She became a teacher in 1877 and opened a night school to help Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland learn English. She also started the Jewish Publication Society and was the first woman to attend the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. She is perhaps best known as the founder of Hadassah, a Jewish women's organization started on Purim in 1912 to combat disease and hunger in Palestine. In 1933, when Hitler came to power, Henrietta traveled to Germany to try to bring as many Jewish children as possible to safety. Throughout the war years, Henrietta worked to bring more than 11,000 children to Palestine through Hadassah's Youth Aliyah program. Churnin's comprehensive and inspiring text, paired with Nayberg's rich multi-layered, expressive, and artful mixed-media illustrations, bring to life this remarkable woman who was long overdue for a picture book biography. Particularly impressive is the way Churnin connects the lessons of the Purim story to Henrietta's life and accomplishments, and how she provides a concise, concrete, age-appropriate explanation of Hitler's rise to power and the plight of the Jewish people in Europe. Extensive back matter provides additional information about Henrietta Szold's life and legacy, a further explanation of Purim, a timeline, and a bibliography. Pair with other biographies of American Jewish women leaders like Goldie Takes a Stand by Barbara Krasner (Kar-Ben, 2014) and Hannah G. Solomon Dared to Make a Difference by Bonnie Lindauer (Kar-Ben, 2021) to help bring Henrietta Szold's words to life for young readers: 'Dare to dream and when you dream, dream big.'" -- Rachel Kamin, Jewish Book Council, "Elegant, assured prose ('The air was thick with tears for lost loved ones'), accentuated by facts and data, will keep readers absorbed alongside Nayberg's engrossingly abstract, fluid illustrations, tinted in rich hues of blue-green and red. A moving biography of a lesser-known heroine."--starred, Publishers Weekly, "Exceptionally informative, well organized, thoroughly 'kid friendly' in presentation, 'A Queen to the Rescue' is the highly recommended picture book biography of Henrietta Szold and especially and unreservedly recommended for . . . young readers ages 8-13."--Midwest Book Review, "Churnin portrays the organizational skill and human kindness of her subject with love and admiration. She expands the main text with comprehensive back matter that includes additional historical information, facts about the Purim holiday and a timeline. Nayberg's stylized cubistic illustrations are striking and convey the human crises that called for a great woman's intervention."--Association of Jewish Libraries, "Churnin's comprehensive and inspiring text, paired with Nayberg's rich multi-layered, expressive, and artful mixed-media illustrations, bring to life this remarkable woman who was long overdue for a picture book biography." -- Rachel Kamin, Jewish Book Council, "Using concise but informative text, Churnin does an excellent job of introducing this dynamic woman in a picture book format . . . [while] Nayberg's modernist, expressionistic illustrations effectively capture Henrietta's powerful persona."--starred, School Library Journal, "Henrietta Szold dedicated her entire life to aiding the most vulnerable. As a young child she saw her mother and rabbi father helping escaped slaves in Civil War-era Baltimore. She felt a connection to the Purim holiday and a kinship with Queen Esther, who bravely saved the Jews from the evil Haman. Although women had few opportunities to be heard, Henrietta was determined to emulate Esther and make a difference in the world. She saw Jewish immigrants facing dire poverty and discrimination and took the first of many giant leaps. She opened a night school for immigrants to learn English, and she became the first editor of the Jewish Publication Society. She founded Hadassah--using Queen Esther's Hebrew name--a women's organization dedicated to raising funds to address hunger and disease among people of every faith in British-controlled Palestine, and established her own residence there. When Hitler came to power she worked tirelessly to rescue as many Jewish children as possible and, with the support of Hadassah, saved thousands. Churnin presents Szold's accomplishments with careful attention to historical accuracy. The explanation of Hitler's extreme actions to destroy all Jews is informative, cogent, and accessible to young readers. The author's tone is admiring, stressing Szold's determination, courage, and endless compassion and reiterating her connection to the lessons of Purim. Nayberg employs light and shadow with elongated figures to illustrate the events and express the entire range of emotions felt by Szold, the people with whom she worked, and those whose lives she affected. A powerful introduction to a little known, very brave woman."--starred, Kirkus Reviews, "This stunning picture book shows why this brave, strong, dedicated woman founded Hadassah, and the interesting story of why this organization was named for Queen Esther, aka Hadassah. Readers will see the impact of Szold's work for immigrants, orphans, Jewish publications, and healthcare in Palestine as well as find themselves in awe of how one person can change the world."--Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle, "Readers will see the impact of Szold's work for immigrants, orphans, Jewish publications, and healthcare in Palestine as well as find themselves in awe of how one person can change the world."--Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle
