Previously, the greater research focus regarding black people in America has been on Africans and persons of African descent as slaves--as dutiful, submissive chattel to the persons who owned them. Limited focus has been given to slaves who took charge of military duties and protected the lives, property, and well-being of their white owners, and, by extension, the New England colonies and their inhabitants.
