Product Information

This publication will be the first full catalog of Glasgow Museums' internationally important collection of ship models. Almost all of the 676 models, which range from elegant cruise liners to humble Clyde puffers, and from simple half-hull design models to magnificent display models, were produced by Clyde shipyards or Glasgow-based ship owners. It is the representation of models from such a distinct geographical area, together with the quality of the models, which makes this collection so exceptional. As well as general chapters about the collection, each of the 676 models have a description and color photograph. Some of the most famous ships launched on the Clyde are represented, such as RMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Hood, as well models of historically significant vessels such as the first European passenger steamer Comet and the world's first commercial turbine-powered vessel King Edward. A stunning collection of photographs complements newly researched and in-depth chapters. The book will give readers worldwide a chance to see images of the models, a sense of the breadth and importance of the collection and a deepened understanding of the whole history of the ship.

Reviews
"A visual delight and beautiful homage to Glasgow's almighty contribution to the industrial age." --Scottish Field, Published in a glossy coffee table book format, Glasgow Museums the Ship Models: A History and Complete Illustrated Catalogue , showcases a fascinating heritage and shines a spotlight on the craftsmanship and skill of the model makers. The Herald, "The production values of this volume are exceptional, from the quality and colour reproduction of the photographs, to the outstanding layout that shows each model to advantage.... This is a beautiful volume that deserves a place in the library of anyone interested in the use of models as essential functional elements in the history of shipbuilding." --The Northern Mariner / Le marin du nord, "Wow... What an incredible book! This chunky near square deluxe hardback coffee-table type book is a thing of incredible beauty. Both as an object in itself - chock-full of richly coloured beautifully crisp photographs of stunning models - and for what it documents.... Visually this deserves ten stars. It's simply jaw-droppingly stunning.... Beautifully produced, an honourable homage to the vast expenditure of skill and passion that the objects it depicts represents. Awesome is a much overused and devalued term nowadays. But it really does fit the bill here.... Highly recommended." --A Question of Scale: A Wargaming Work in Progress, "For those interested in ships and ship models this hugely impressive book offers the prospect of many hours spent happily dipping into what must be one of the finest collections of ship models in the UK. The book also brings the entire collection together, as in reality it is split between the Riverside Museum itself on the banks of the Clyde and the museum's resource center located elsewhere in the city. The authors and Seaforth are to be congratulated for such a carefully thought-out and well-produced book. It is lavishly illustrated and well designed, with the high production values we generally associate with this publisher." --Warship, "This beautifully produced book published in co-operation with the Glasgow Museums illustrates and provides background information about this remarkable collection of over 600 ship models. The majority represent ships built on the Clyde between the late eighteenth and early twenty-first centuries and the collection as a whole is an important international resource for the study of shipbuilding as well as being a delight for generations of model-makers and collectors.... Overall, this is an impressive book that will appeal to anyone with an interest in the evolution of the shipbuilding industry, model-makers, and those who simply are fascinated by model ships. Its production qualities are exceptional. Highly recommended." --Nautical Research Journal, "[A] beautifully produced book.... Impressive.... It should certainly appeal to anyone with an interest in the evolution of the shipbuilding industry, model-makers and those who are fascinated by model ships. It should also attract readers with an interest in the history of ships." --The Australian Naval Institute, "[An] extraordinary coffee table book.... Ranging from the majestic RMS Queen Mary and famous Royal Naval battleship HMS Hood, to the humble Clyde puffer, this showcases the ships' beauty inside and out. It shines a light on the international importance of the city's shipbuilding industry. A visual delight and beautiful homage to Glasgow's almighty contribution to the industrial age." --Scottish Field, "Published in a glossy coffee table book format, Glasgow Museums the Ship Models: A History and Complete Illustrated Catalogue , showcases a fascinating heritage and shines a spotlight on the craftsmanship and skill of the model makers." --The Herald

It arrived slightly late but that was not the main issue. It was poorly packaged and arrived damaged, packaged without due care which is unacceptable.
