Product Information

One Dream or Two? is a critical historical, constitutional, and philosophical examination of Martin Luther King Jr's understanding of justice--his "Dream"--from within the context of the American political tradition. Nathan Schlueter introduces King's "I Have a Dream Speech" and then isolates elements of his larger vision for social justice--paying special attention to issues of racial discrimination, political economy, civil disobedience, and the relationship between politics and religion--situating those elements within historical, rhetorical, and political context.

Reviews
The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr is debated, should be debated, and likely will be debated for generations to come. This book is an uncommonly fair-minded and informed contribution to that debate., Schlueter interprets the "I Have a Dream" speech through an insightful and extensive consideration of Martin Luther King Jr'ssocial, religious, political, and economic thought. By juxtaposing King's appreciation of the American ideals of equality and freedom with King's criticism of how these principles were unequally practiced, Schlueter offers a more capacious assessment of King's "dream" than is typically rendered by either liberal or conservative commentators. Next to the speeches and writings of Martin Luther King Jr, One Dream or Two? offers the best introduction to King's political agenda and its place in the development of American liberalism., Schlueter interprets the I Have a Dream speech through an insightful and extensive consideration of Martin Luther King Jr's social, religious, political, and economic thought. Not thrilled, my entire reason buying this out of print book was to get the CD that was originally included when it was first published. CD was not included, no mention of this in the listing — this purchase was like roulette, I knew I was taking my chances but I’m still disappointed. I grew up in Berkeley where Moe’s Books is based, so this is a drag — book had a big dent in the cover as well, also not mentioned. Still seeking the CD that was originally included when new.
