Together they take on the union of Modern-Eggman and Classic-Eggman. The two villains are trying to sow chaos by manipulating time. That's the root of how the two eras can overlap. It lets the team mix old villains, like Metal Sonic, in with new bosses. It even includes a cameo of Super Sonic. The presentation banks on nostalgia. The music contains many classic themes, both old and remixed. It is done to invoke the player's memories of the older games in the series. The locations work the same way.
