Product Information
Thacher Island was named for Anthony Thacher who, in 1635, lost his four children and other family members in a shipwreck during the most severe storm to ever hit the Massachusetts coast. Only Anthony and his wife Elizabeth survived. The lighthouses have played an important role in several wars, including the Revolutionary War and World Wars I and II, when the navy established a radio compass station to protect the coast from enemy submarines. A ship bearing a U.S. president almost wrecked on Thacher Island, and the island was used as a witness protection site for a Mafia criminal. Twin Lights of Thacher Island, Cape Ann captures the history, adventures, and intimate stories from over 200 years of lighthouse keepers living on the island, including how the two towers were built and how scientific discoveries were applied to improve the lights over the years.

Title: Shining light on Thacher Island Author: Jonathan L'Ecuyer Publisher: Gloucester Times Date: 4/27/2010 Less than a mile off the coast of Rockport, Thacher Island's twin lights are the last fully operational paired lights in the nation. And the lighthouses have played an important role in the Revolutionary War, and World Wars I and II, protecting the coast from enemy submarines. But while the book many locals consider to be the definitive history of the island was penned by the late Rockport author Eleanor C. Parsons in 1984, there hadn't been a compilation of historical photos available in book form - until now. Through more than 200 vintage photographs, local author and Thacher Island Association President Paul St. Germain has captured the history, adventures, and intimate stories from more than two centuries of lighthouse keepers living on the island in a book titled "Twin Lights of Thacher Island, Cape Ann." "I'm a history buff and like nautical type things and thought (this book) would be a nice thing to have as a keepsake," St. Germain said when discussing what inspired him to write the book, due for release next Monday. "The other reasons were to put as many historic photos that I know exist into one publication and to raise the island's profile and draw people to volunteer or visit the island." The book, part of Arcadia Publishing's popular "Images of America" collection, includes the history of the island from 1771 to the present day, told through detailed explanations of hundreds of vintage photographs from both public and private collections. The book boasts photos St. Germain found more than a decade ago in the National Archives in Washington. St. Germain, who can see the island from his Marmion Way home, became interested in Thacher Island in 1999, when he was asked to join the Thacher Island Association's Board of Directors. In 2002, he was elected president of the association and has worked to develop a variety of ways to fund restoration efforts on the island. In 2000, he researched and wrote the nomination application which resulted in designating the Cape Ann Light Station on Thacher Island as a National Historic Landmark by the Interior Department's National Park Service. During the two-year research phase, he unearthed a wide variety of original documents and photographs which traced the unique history of the twin lights of Thacher Island. St. Germain showed his friend, Parsons, the collection of old photographs just six months before she died. After seeing what he had gathered, Parsons urged him to compile a picture book to serve as a "nice complement to her book" about the island, St. Germain said. A portion of the net sales from the book is being donated to the Thacher Island Association, a nonprofit organization, toward maintenance and restoration efforts on the island. The island, an image of which serves as Rockport's official town symbol, was named after Anthony Thacher, who in 1635 lost his four children and other family members in a shipwreck during what many consider to be the most severe storm ever to hit the Massachusetts coast - only he and his wife, Elizabeth, survived. St. Germain obtained many images for the book from the Sandy Bay Historical Society, of which he has been a board member. Many of the photographs were produced using Charles Cleaves' extensive collection of glass plate negatives taken in the 1920s, including a photo of Cleaves himself - a prominent Rockport businessman at the time - standing on the red U.S. Coast Guard bell buoy, located near the reef at Avery's Ledge at the entrance to Rockport Harbor. A photo of the USS George Washington, found on Page 113, tells an interesting tale. In February 1919, President Woodrow Wi
