This book by one of the foremost mediaevalists in the United States reconsiders the first female writer in French, Marie de France. Bloch argues that Marie is among the most complex, self-conscious, provocative and sophisticated writers of her time -the Joyce of the 12th century. where she was born and to what rank, who her parents were, or whether she was married or single. In the face of this great writer's near anonymity, scholars have assumed her to be a simple, na've and modest Christian figure. But Bloch reveals a writer of a much different stature. At a moment of great historical turning, during the so-called Renaissance of the 12th century, Marie both disrupted prevailing cultural values and founded new ones. According to Bloch, she was an author obsessed with writing, remembrance and translation - an artist keenly aware of her role in the preservation of cultural memory and of the transforming social and political powers of writing itself.
