Britain had fought in World War II to save the world from fascism. But just a few years after the defeat of Hitler, the British colonial government turned against its own subjects and detained nearly the entire Kikuyu population of some 1.5 million people in Kenya. Prompting this draconian policy was the Mau Mau uprising - a massive, armed rebellion launched by the Kikuyu people as part of their demand for the return of the land and freedom that had been confiscated from them by the British crown. Britain refused, choosing instead to depict the Kikuyu as sub-human savages, devoid of any human rights. From 1952 to 1960, the British orchestrated a series of massive forced removals and purgings that sent hundreds of thousands of men, women and children to detention camps. Until now, this story has remained almost completely untold, largely because the British colonial government destroyed most of its files. For the last eight years, Caroline Elkins has conducted exhaustive research to piece this history back together, unearthing reams of documents and conducting interviews with several hundred Kikuyu men and women who survived the camps.     Good! Nice edition, hard cover. Slightly yellowing paper and smashed top corners of the cover due to poor packaging (light and eco, but not good enough for a hardcover book).
