Caillou: Magic Playhouse features a nearly identical format to that of the companion game, Caillou: Birthday Party. Instead of exploring Caillou's home for birthday hats and party favors, children look for hidden treasure, play games with the babysitter, and make crafts. Educational topics targeted at children ages two to six include early spelling, patterns, counting, computer skills, spatial relationships, phonics, reading and memory. Five of the activities offer three difficulty levels, and most include printable crafts for use away from the computer.<br><br>Playhouse themes include sports, music, sun and sand, or nature, with each setting dictating the type of items found during the treasure hunt. Interactive hot spots throughout Caillou's house let players activate animations, place treasures in their collection, or access activities. Activities are introduced by short video clips featuring animated characters from the Caillou television show, with another clip with puppets from the program offered upon completion of tasks. The interface in the cartoon-like adventure is entirely mouse-driven.
