Reviews
"His hypothesis is indeed intriguing and innovative.... Crony Capitalism is a valuable contribution to the growing literature on the state's role in development and on the business-state relation in Korea's economy. It is among the first substantive comparative studies of Korea and another nation within Southeast Asia." Business History Review, 'David King's book is a valuable analysis of the relationship of corporate corruption to development.' International Affairs, 'Although previous literature mostly portrayed the Park regime as the paragon of the developmental state, Kang convincingly reveals that politics under the Park regime was actually money ridden.' Japanese Journal of Political Science, "Kang's approach fits within the genre of studies on developmental states, and most closely complements Alice Amsden's Asia's Next Giant. But it reaches beyond this analysis and sets a new research course by providing political explanations for both successes and failures of the developmental state. Recommended for general readers and upper-division undergraduates and above." Choice, "David Kang's book gives excellent succor to the field of East Asian political economy, squarely dealing with both development and crisis and presenting a balanced analysis of what went right and what went wrong." Perspectives on Politics, 'This book challenges the political causes of developmental failures. It has the merit of being concise while presenting a forceful argument ... Kang handles the Korean-Philippine comparison with great assurance, and his book will interest not only political economists specializing in East Asia, but also those whose geographical focus is elsewhere.'Journal of Public Policy, 'This book challenges the political causes of developmental failures. Journal of Public Policy, "David Kang's recent book Crony Capitalism is deserving of special commendation and attention for its crisp and clear coverage of two cases, the Philippines and South Korea." The Review of Politics, "This comparative approach is a critical starting point in analyzing two societies...This book is useful for understanding the challenges faced by a developing state." Synopsis
This book addresses the issue of money politics in Korea. It asks whether we can reconcile the view of an efficient developmental state in Korea before 1997 with reports of massive corruption and inefficiency in that same country in 1998 and 1999., Why has the literature on Asian development not addressed the issue of money politics in Korea? How can we reconcile the view of an efficient developmental state in Korea before 1997 with reports of massive corruption and inefficiency in that same country in 1998 and 1999? Politics is central to the answer. This study argues that both Korea and the Philippines experienced significant corruption throughout the post-independence era, and that political--not economic--considerations dominated policy making in both countries., Why has the literature on Asian development not addressed the issue of money politics in Korea? How can we reconcile the view of an efficient developmental state in Korea before 1997 with reports of massive corruption and inefficiency in that same country in 1998 and 1999? Politics is central to the answer. In this book the author makes two arguments. First, both Korea and the Philippines experienced significant corruption throughout the post-independence era. Second, political - not economic - considerations dominated policy making in both countries. Focusing on the exchange of favors for bribes between state and business, the author argues that politics drove policy choices, that bureaucrats were not autonomous from political interference in setting policy, and that business and political elites wrestled with each other over who would reap the rents to be had. Even in Korea, corruption was far greater than the conventional wisdom allows.

From accepting my bid price, to the shipping, the packaging was EXCEPTIONAL, the details put into customer service are above "as described" it was absolutely pronominal. Clearly cleaned the truck inside and out to look as new as possible. Looks like old new stock! Looks and feels like brand new. With the world getting greedy and prices across the board skyrocketing, this purchase reminded me that some people are still just awesome at being awesome. Thanks 🤘
